SKULL APPRECIATION DAY (week)!! Day 4- MelissaJune 7, 2012
Todays skull is currently missing in action… as is our fellow craniophile who suggested it! Embarrassed about being a King Diamond fan maybe…. just kidding, we like him too!
If you haven’t guessed it, day 4 of our Skull appreciation day (week) is dedicated to Melissa- the skull used as a stage prop by Kim Peterson AKA King Diamond while fronting the Danish metal band Mercyful fate. We’ll be honest… we don’t really know how he got the skull, or where it ended up, but here is the story as told by the internet (so it must be true….?!)
Apparently, he sourced the human skull along with 2 long bones (femur and tibia) from unknown sources- although the internet assures us that they are of human origin. The femur (thigh bone) and tibia (calf bone) were used to make his mike stand, which you can see him holding proudly in the picture below. The skull however, was used simply for decoration or as a stage prop. As you can see from the pictures the calvaria (skull cap) has been removed, suggesting it was probably originally destined for an anatomy lesson somewhere. Melissa was stolen at a show in the Netherlands in the 80s and despite rumours of her return, King Diamond has assured the media that he is still without his beloved Melissa- Blabbermouth confirmation here!
So do we have any closet, our out and proud King Diamond fans within our Craniophile friends? Or does anyone know the real where abouts of Melissa? Let us know!
